The National Library of Russia in Saint Petersburg is the oldest public library in the country and one of the largest in the world. Formerly known as the Imperial Public Library, it was established in 1795 by Catherine the Great and inaugurated on 14 January 1814. The Neoclassical building was designed by architect Yegor Sokolov.The history of the National Library of Russia begins with its foundation in 1795 and covers a period of 200 years. It covers the eras of Catherine the Great, Alexander I, Nicholas I, the major reforms that took place in the 1850s, the February Revolution of 1917, the October Revolution of 1917, World War II, as well as other crucial periods in Russian history.
